Today is shaping up to be one of those days that can cause a man to give up. It seems that all the kids are frustrated and not a one happy. I have been constantly pulled away from my desk and the only relief in sight is time. It is at this time that I need to take a breath and try to center myself. Look at the problem and come to a solution.
I sent them all outside to play. Problem solved! Well the problem will be solved for now but what do I do when they come back inside? I will have to come up with a plan for them so that they will be able follow instruction and create a productive environment.
The things we discuss are universal. They apply to all people. What I just described to was a day in my classroom of autistic kiddos but some of you were thinking that is what my 3rd grade classroom or my angry teenager is acting like. It applies to all. If we are to build a solid relationship with people we have to be able to take a deep breath and center ourselves. If we refuse to adapt to our environment we will not be successful in our pursuit of relationship building. Look at the dinosaurs, they were not able to adapt and they we extinct.
I could easily get frustrated to the point of quitting or I can slow things down and formulate a plan so that when I am engaged with the kids again I can do it better and we both reap the reward. Each day my life presents a new challenge to which I have to adapt to. If there comes a time that I refuse to adapt then I will have to find another line of work.
Be insightful and flexible enough to know when it is time to slow down and plan. This will help you to make the right decision when the time is right. Nobody knows you like you do so it is up to you to regulate what you do. we will discuss this in a future blog.
